Mzingwane High School is an all-boys government high school that is located Esigodini, Matabeleland South. The School is near the town of Esigodini (formerly Essexvale) a small farming and mining town about 45km south of the city of Bulawayo.
History
The origins of the school are in northern Matabeleland in the more arid Tsholotsho area. It was first called Tjolotjo Government Industrial School in the Mavela area of Tsholotsho founded by H.S Keigwin, the Native Commissioner of the ruling British Empire at the time. The school was moved to the lusher southern rolling hills of Esigodini then Essexvale between the years 1941 and 1944.
Academics
Headed by Moroka Magaya, the high school is considered one of the best in Zimbabwe in academics. In 2001, the school had the best-advanced level results in the whole of Zimbabwe.
The subjects taught in form 1 and form 4, include Mathematics, Geography, English Literature, SiNdebele, History, Commerce, and Art among others. It is compulsory for form 1 students to select one of the technical subjects, either metalwork or woodwork). If a student passes their O level, they can continue to Advanced Level and specialize in a combination of three subjects. These can either be either sciences, arts or a variegated combination 3 subjects selected from the pool limited to Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, English Literature, Isi Ndebele, and History.
Extracurricular activities
The school offers a lot of sporting activities like athletics, beach volleyball, chess, volley ball and football whose team reached the finals of the national championship this year. Clubs like debate and public are also on offer at the school. Mzingwane has also performed exceptionally well in this area, with the team reaching a provincial level in 2015.
