Soul Jah Love
Soul Jah Love, who was born Soul Musaka, is a popular Zimbabwean Dance Hall artist who is known who born and bred in the capital of Zimbabwe, Harare. He was born on 22 November of 1989 as a twin to a brother named John who is popularly known as Ba Paris.
Early Life
The hitmaker has spoken, especially through his lyrics about how he led a life a difficult childhood in the streets and how he was condemned and rejected as a child. His mother passed when he was just a year old and he was taken in by his grandmother who also died when he was 5 years old. His father as well passed when he 14 after which his stepmother kicked him out of the family home.
Career
Soul Jah Love rose to prominence in 2012 with his hit records like Ndini Uya Uya and Gum-Kum. The talented Mbare based chanter was fortunate enough to break through within a short space of time. He has since continued to produce hits like Zvinhu and Handichabatika. He is considered to be Zimbabwe’s very own version of Jamaican Gaza King, Vybs Kartel insofar as talent is concerned.
He has one the biggest Zimdancehall band of 20 members, although many people feel the group is unnecessarily bloated considering that only six members will be on stage at a time.
In 2014 he was arrested for failing to honour a contractual agreement with Uptown Club in Gweru. This was after the star received $380 in payment via a friend’s Ecocash account. When the promoters tried to reach him after that his phone was unreachable. The incident came a week after he and fellow musician Seh Calaz made headlines for failing to perform at Club Whispers in Highfield after getting paid.
Politics.
His music took a turn into Zanu Pf faction politics when he released a song in 2015 attacking the parties former secretary of administration, Dydymas who was under fire at the time. The track showered praises on First Lady Grace Mugabe who had just entered into local politics as Zanu Pf’s Women’s league boss the year before. This track got a lot of backlash, with critics saying that his decision to openly align himself with Zanu PF would alienate his none Zanu PF fans.
Personal
The Rastafarian was traditionally married to Bonty Lisa, a fellow Zimbabwean artist in 2017 after four years of being in love. The pair got engaged in front of thousands of their fans back in April 2014 at a show in Harare Gardens. The traditional ceremony took place in Kuwadzana on the 26th of August on a Saturday. The ceremony was led by Souls brother Ba Paris who was accompanied by his two uncles who acted as Vanyai. Soul’s family parted with $9000 in cash for the bride.
The couple, however, did not arrive at this point easily. They had a series of nasty breakups during their 4-year relationship which made headlines all over the country. It was alleged that Chibaba, as Soul Jah Love is also known, had paid US$10 as lobola to Lisa’s mother. On their last separation, before they got married, Bounty Lisa moved to Cape Town. Allegations were that Soul Jah Love has, in addition to verbally abusing Bounty Lisa, also mocked his wife to be’s mother.
