ZRP launches ‘No to Unregistered Vehicles’ campaign
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is conducting an operation dubbed: ‘No to Unregistered Vehicles’ in the country.
In a statement, ZRP Acting Senior Staff Officer – Press and Public Relations, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said a total of 269 vehicles have been impounded since the 1st of this month for moving on the country’s roads whilst the owners have not effected change of ownership in terms of the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act (Chapter 13:14).
He said the ZRP has noted the increased disregard of traffic laws by motorists and the commission of criminal acts such as thefts, robberies and sexual assaults, among other acts, by elements using unregistered vehicles and those without number plates.
Among the impounded vehicles, 67 were operating as public service vehicles yet they had not registered in terms of the Road Motor Transportation Act.
Chief Superintendent Nyathi said the operation will continue for an indefinite period, adding that non-compliant vehicles will be impounded until the necessary registration procedures are completed.
The ZRP is also conducting a simultaneous operation codenamed, USALAMA IV and involving 26 countries in the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCO) and the Eastern African Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCO), targeting theft of motor vehicles, drug trafficking, trafficking in human beings and illicit firearms, among others.
