Location:
Alaska is a small mining town in the Makonde District of Mashonaland West Province in central northern Zimbabwe.The town is located approximately 15 kilometres west of the city of Chinhoyi, the location of the district and provincial headquarters. Approximately 7 kilometres to the northeast of Alaska are the Chinhoyi Caves in the Chinhoyi Caves National Park, a local tourist attraction. The town sits at an elevation of 1,180 metres, above sea level
Background:
The town is named for and grew around Alaska Copper Mine, which started producing copper in 1959. Other mines in the district also produced copper which was brought to Alaska for smelting and refining. The mine and its associated smelter closed in 1998, devastating the local economy and plunging the town’s inhabitants into poverty.
