Background:
This memorial was erected at the express wish of Cecil Rhodes , to the memory of the men of the Shangani Patrol who were killed on the 4th of December 1893. Led by Major Allan Wilson.
Allan Wilson was part of a column that went in pursuit of King Lobengula during his flee from Bulawayo .
Allan Wilson went on ahead with a patrol and got near the king’s group but the Shangani River came down in floods, cutting Wilson and his men off from reinforcements .The Ndebele troops attacked and killed all 34 men.
