Christopher Ushewokunze
Christopher Ushewokunze was a Zimbabwean politician, lawyer, economist and a national hero.
Christopher was born on the 27th of April 1944 in Shurugwi in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe. He attended Waddilove Mission and Goromonzi High School’s for his primary and secondary education and later enrolled at the University of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1965 as a law student and became active in nationalist politics.
Between 1965 and 1966 Ushewokunze was a students committee leader and was involved in the organisation of anti-government protests which included a major protest against the Unilateral Declaration of Independence by the Ian Smith government.
Following UDI he was expelled from university due to his political activities, a detention at Gonakudzingwa soon followed. He was released from detention 12 months later under police escort to the airport where he was seen off to United Kingdom. With a British Council scholarship, he was admitted at Edinburgh University in Scotland where he continued with his law studies. After gratuation from Edinburgh University he enrolled for a Masters Degreea at London University in 1970 becoming a barrister at Middle Temple on completion of his studies in 1973.
