Shangani Battle Field Memorial
The memorial was erected in memory of the battle between Matabele warriors (1893) and Allan Wilson and his men.
Following King Lobengula’s flight from his capital Bulawayo a month before, Allan Wilson and 33 of his men went after the king. He led the Shangani Patrol in search of King Lobengula and, on 4 December 1893, he and his men were cut off from the main column and killed by the Ndebele warriors.
The Memorial
The Shangani Battle Field Memorial was erected in their memorial where the bodies were buried but the remains were transferred and interred at Great Zimbabwe.
They were also later exhumed and reinterred at World’s View in Matopo in March 1904.
Memorial Location and Description:
The memorial situated in the Matopo Hills consists of four bronze panels depicting in relief the men of the patrol. (Panels were designed by R.A Tweed). Panel length for all panels is 2,1 meters high and 4,5 meters long .
Memorial Inscriptions:
”Erected in the enduring memory of Allan Wilson and his men who fell in fight against the Matebele on the Shangani River, 4th December 1893. There was no survivor .”
