International Trade in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe’s international trade pattern has not changed significantly since Independence.
Although Zimbabwe is a landlocked country and a long distance from many large international markets, international trade is a major determinant of the performance of the local economy and accounts for a considerable contribution to the local economy and also for a considerable contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Trade.
Zimbabwe’s international trade pattern has not changed significantly since Independence. Despite the continuing efforts of local manufacturers to increase external sales the bulk of Zimbabwe’s exports still comprise raw materials or semi-processed materials.
The economy however continues to be dependent on petroleum and chemical product imports and on industrial, transport and telecommunications equipment purchased abroad.
Financial and economic planners indicate over and over again that an outward-looking, export-oriented strategy is necessary to ensure the country’s economic well-being.
