Dry spell threatens agric season

The prolonged dry spell in parts of Masvingo rural has left farmers in a difficult predicament as crops are beginning to wilt.
A survey areas which include Chikutuva and Nemamwa revealed a bad state of affairs for the farmers as the crops are showing signs of severe moisture stress.
The 2016-2017 summer cropping season was a good one for those in most parts of the country and farmers have enough to last them until April.
But for some areas in Mwenezi which experienced water logging, it was a disastrous season, hence they are desperate for a better season this year.
While the construction of Tokwe-Mukosi dam has breathed hope for the region with experts citing its existence will ultimately alter weather patterns in the area for the better, that transformation is yet to be felt and for now many farmers in Masvingo Province will continue to clutch upon hope that the torching sun will soon subside and that the heavens can open up for the much needed rains.
