Hippo mystery deaths update: Anthrax bacteria found in carcasses

The preliminary findings of blood samples taken from hippos carcasses in Mlibizi, Binga are showing traces of bacteria that causes anthrax.
Since the carcass of the first hippo was discovered on the 27th of March, there has been speculation on what might have killed the hippos that were found dead at Mlibizi river in Binga.
Further tests are still being carried out to confirm the initial findings.
The Parks and Wildlife Management Authority says they have instigated several measures to reduce the spread of the disease among them making sure that the carcasses are destroyed before being opened.
The authority has also stopped people from consuming the meat and urged the affected community to immediately seek medical treatment if they suspect any symptoms of anthrax.
Awareness campaigns have been planned for the entire district and will be carried out with Environmental Management Agency, Forestry Commission as well as the Veterinary Services Department to educate the communities on the dangers of eating meat from dead animals whose cause of death is not known.
