Diary of a single mom 13
The rest of the week passed uneventfully. Charles didn’t call or text. I had mixed feelings about that. Perhaps he had not enjoyed my company that much. Perhaps it was just for the best. Am glad I had deleted his number otherwise I would not have been able to handle the temptation.
.
.The days drew on until it was time to go back to college. I wasn’t really thrilled about it. The night before my departure, Mom called me to the lounge. My dad’s younger brother Joshua, aunt Mavis, my mom and my dad were all in there. I knew something was up but I wasn’t sure what. So I greeted everyone and sat.
.
.My dad cleared his throat. ‘I had to call your aunt and uncle to bear witness to what I am about to say.’
My heart missed a beat. Only thing I thought was perhaps they had decided against my going back to school.
.
You are going back to school in a different state. We are not going to be there and the first few weeks’ people are going to react in all sorts of ways. It’s going to be challenging. But remember we are there for you. You can still achieve your goals and make something out of the lemonade. Your mother and I will try to make sure you have what you need.’
I took a sigh of relief. Not entirely what I had thought.
‘You have become a woman,’ my mother said,’ but you are still our little girl. We are there for you. So when you go to college take care of yourself. We just expect you to stay focused on getting your diploma. You are going to be a mother so you are going to need this more than ever.’
.
.I did shed a tear. I thanked my parents for their support. I was really grateful.
When I went to bed that night my sisters had a surprise for me.
‘We thought we should get you something.’ Theo said.
‘Oh, so you are happy that I am going away?’ I teased.
‘In a way- no more waiting upon the queen.’ Thalia joked
‘I see,’ I said.
‘Please open it.’ Theo said, ‘I was born with no patience’
.
She handed me a neatly wrapped box. I opened it and inside was beautiful white dress.
‘Every woman needs a sexy white dress,’ Theo said.
‘I think the saying says black,’ I said giving them a hug. I was delighted.
.
‘Do try it on,’ Thalia said clasping her hands together. The dress was lovely. It sort of flowed on me.
‘I love it!’ I hugged them once again. So thoughtful of them. Mom had bought me a few dresses as well- to make room for the growing belly.
Aunt Mavis had offered to drive me to college and help me get settled, which she did. My room was on third floor. Aunt said climbing the stairs would be good enough exercise for me.
I had neither heard from James nor Charles. I thought of the former more often because of the pregnancy and as for the latter I tried to block from my memory.
The next morning I went for lectures and saw my college mates. People had read about my being pregnant on our Facebook group page. I had not read it myself and had no wish to do so..i didn’t need to see the comments. I couldn’t say who and for what reason. But all I knew was that I had met a couple of my college mates at press conferences or important occasions that they were also covering. Maybe it was just best that people had been kept updated. Hence they didn’t look so surprised. Life.
But then there was Farai. Eish, I had to talk to him.
