King Mzilikazi was the founder and first king of the Matebele nation
- He was born in South Africa in 1790 and died on September 9 1868 at Ingama near Bulawayo in Matebeland.
King Mzilikazi was a lieutenant of Tshaka the king of the Zulu’s. In June 1822 he revolted against Tshaka, he fled a disastrous fate from the Zulu king with his people trekking northwards into modern day Zimbabwe arriving in Matebeleland in 1840. They conquered many tribes along the way to Matebeland creating an immense and ethnically diverse nation along the way.
When he died in 1868, his son King Lobengula succeded him and became the last king of the Matebele nation. He was buried in a cave in the Matopo Hills
