Samuel Howard Edwards was born at Bethelsdorp,Cape Colony, South Africa on 27th November 1827.
He became a hunter and trader in South Africa in 1848. In 1854 he made the journey to Matabeleland with J Chapman and Robert Moffat to visit King Mzilikazi and became one of the first Europeans to visit the king and this part of Zimbabwe.
In 1888 he assisted C. Rudd to gain a concession (the Rudd Concession) from King Lobengula.
He was one of the few Europeans who acted as an official and advisor to King Mzilikazi.
He died on 21 June 1922 in South Africa.
