Andrada Joaquim Carlos Pana
Portuguese Soldier and Businessman
Andrada Joaquim Carlos Pana was born on the 29th November 1846 in Lisbon, Portugal.
He joined the Portuguese army in 1865, he was a military attaché in Paris in 1870. In 1872 Andrada returned to Portugal, where he gained steady promotion. A few years later in 1878 he received a vast concession from the Portuguese government for all the gold mines in Zambezia which were not being worked. With French finance the General Company of Zambezia was formed, but after two expeditions it was liquidated (1883). Andrada had been impressed by the gold possibilities of Mashonaland , however in 1884 the Ophir Company was floated . This also went into liquidation
He then travelled through Mashonaland , Manicaland and Gazaland with da Souse prospecting and making contact with various chiefs . In 1888 he started the Mozambique company with such men as the Conde De Penhalonga and Edmond Bartissol on the board. Andrada, as lieutenant-colonel and administrator of the company, went to Macequece in January 1889 to meet Baron Rezende and the following year (1890 ) he was at Chief Mutasa’s kraal confirming Portuguese authority in the area when he was arrested by the B.S.A Company’s police and sent to South Africa under escort. He continued his military career , becoming a general in 1907.
He died in Paris, April 1928
