Olympic Yatchsman
Alan was nominated as a finalist for the sportsperson of the year award in 1960, his success at the 1960 Olympic was an historic achievement in the sporting history of the nation. Especially considering the fact that he was a native of a small landlocked country in Africa. Crewed by Chris Devan he finished first in one of the seven races, second in another and forth overall in the Flying Dutchman category.
In the 1964 Olympics a broken rudder threw him completely out of the a top spot in the competition and he finished 11th. After the exclusion of Rhodesia from the 1968 Olympics Butler missed the games, he was later chosen to compete in the 1972 games but died in a car crash while in Europe to prepare for the games.
He died in 1972
