All about Tererai Mugwadi
Born on 26 January, Tererai Mugwadi is a female Zimbabwean RnB musician who was raised in Mount Hampden, Harare. She is one of the pioneers of the urban grooves music genre.
Tererai joined the music industry in her teens. She rose to fame in 2000 with her song ‘Waenda’. The song is found on ‘Chamhembe Volume 1’ compilation album. The song was followed by the release of other songs such as ‘Sands of Time’, ‘Heya’ and ‘I would and I will’.
The Zimbabwean songstress has done collaborations with Sanii Makhalima, Roki and Alexio Kawara. In 2013, Mugwadi was working on her second album ‘The Tea Time, Listen Up Volume Two’. Some of the songs she has so far released include, ‘Chii Chiri Kuitika’, ‘Bata Musoro’, ‘Where’s Our Future’, ‘Samba Song’, ‘Aiwa’, ‘Heya’ and many others.
Drug and alcohol addiction
In 2011, Tererai, who was 26 at the time, was reported to have been suffering alcoholism and addiction to drugs like mbanje and other hard drugs. Her fellow musicians in the industry expressed their concern for the troubled star who was going for days hopping from one friend’s house to the next, exposing herself to several other dangers.
By this time, according to Nehanda radio, Tererai had been sexually abused by several musicians to the extent that nobody really cared about her anymore. The few friends she was left with in the industry came together and raised money for her to be sent to a private rehabilitation center to treat her alcoholism as well as her drug addiction. This was a touching effort by her remaining friends to avoid a Whiney Houston fate falling upon the songstress.
Homicide scandal
On the 23rd of June 2017, Mugwadi was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and culpable homicide shortly after she was involved in an accident that killed a man and injured several others while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The victims accused her of having refused to offer any assistance during the fatal ordeal.
The matter, which was remanded to September 8, for the continuation of the trial will recommence with the last state witness Lameck Chiyeka taking to the stand.
Tererai is now married to her former manager, Liberty Mafukidze and has a son named Gabriel.
