Ammara Brown is a Zimbabwean singer, instrumentalist, dancer, songwriter, producer, actress and brand ambassador.
Background:
Ammara is the daughter of Zimbabwe’s legendary musician Andy Brown and ex-wife Soraya Khan and second born of Andy’s ten children, she was step daughter to Chiwoniso Maraire another late legendary Zimbabwean songstress and instrumentalist.
Ammara was born in Zimbabwe in 1988 and spent her early life living and attending early development education in the country. Following her parents divorce in 1994 she moved aged ten to the United States of America with her mother Soraya.
Career:
- Introduced into the music industry age three by her musical and artist family
- By the age of nine she could by play various instruments mainly the piano and the marimba which her father’s wife at the time Chiwoniso Maraire had taught her
- In 1997 she appeared in an Olivine cooking advert with the great Zimbabwean musician Oliver Mtukudzi.
- At fifteen she started appearing and playing at her father’s perfomances and his band “The Storm”
- In 2004, Ammara won the regional Music Crossroads competition and went on to study music at College of Performing Arts.
- In 2007 she was contestant Mnet’s East Africa Idols talent search contest which hosted a list of Zimbabwean and regional talent which included the presenter Lebogang Mzwimbi, Mkhulili Bhebhe, Zambia’s Mampi and the eventual winner Eric Moyo. Her light shown at the contest as she finished in the top 5.
- During the same time she was given a chance to write theme songs for SABC1’s Mzanzi Insider, and SABC 2’s Q-Base
- She has shared the stage with the likes of Mtukudzi, Kirk Franklin, Hugh Masekela, HHP, P-Square and Lira among many others.
- Ammara has gone on to perform on many international stages such as Sauti Za Busara and HIFA and in 2015 graced the prestigious Jo’burg Theatre in the multi-award nominated production “Colour Me Human.”
