Andrew Hartmann was ordained in 1879 and joined the Society of Jesus in 1883. Born in 1851 in Austria he arrived in Bulawayo in 1888 and in 1890 he traveled with the Pioneer Column to Salisbury as the roman Catholic Chaplain.
He was offered and accepted the Chishawasha area by the British South Africa Company on behalf of the Society of Jesus.
Hartmann Primary School in Harare is named after him.
