Hunter and Prospector
Henry Hartley was born in England in 1820. He travelled to South Africa and from 1859 he hunted north of the Limpopo and was later given permission by King Mzilikazi to hunt in Mashonaland.
Hartley was one of the first prospectors to discover ancient gold workings in Zimbabwe mostly around the areas he hunted (around modern day Chegutu). Chegutu was previously named Hatley town after Henry Hartley and in present day Zimbabwe there is school Hartley Primary School which bears his name in the same town.
The Hartley gold findings expeditions were widely publicized that they created interest all over the globe and alerted individuals like Cecil Rhodes of the minerals in Zimbabwe.
He died in South Africa in 1876.
