William Gaul was born on 24 June 1850 in Ulster, Ireland. He received his education at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
In 1873 he was ordained as bishop and in 1875 he arrived in South Africa and worked there until 1895 when he was elected to succeed the Rt Revd G.W.H. Knight-Bruce as Bishop of Mashonaland.
Gaul retired from Mashonaland in 1907 and went to live in England; but he returned to South Africa in 1912, settling in Cape Town, where he died on Ascension Day 1928.
He officiated at the funeral of Cecil John Rhodes and helped draft the Rhodes Trust Deed
