Governor of Southern Rhodesia
Humprey Gibbs appointed Governor of Southern Rhodesia in 1960 and in 1963 he was sworn in as Governor General of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
Born in London, England on the 22nd of November 1902, he was educated at Eton College, Trinity College and then Cambridge University.
He arrived in Rhodesia in 1928 and settled to work as a farmer. During his carrer he served as Chairman of the Rhodesia National Resource Board and became a Member of the Rhodesian Assembly for Wankie (Hwange) in 1948.
When the Government of Southern Rhodesia made a Unilateral Declaration of Independence on the 11th November 1965, he maintained his position as Governor of Southern Rhodesia in protest of the declaration.
He died in Harare on 5 November 1990.
