British South Africa Company Founder Member
George Cawston was a stockbroker and barrister millionaire in his day who made his fortune by being a founding member and director of the British South Africa Company.
Born and educated in London he was called to the bar in 1882, and later became a financier. He had an interest in forming mining exploration companies and he sent E.A Maund to Lobengula in Bulawayo to seek a concession. When Maund arrived in Bulawayo he found C.D Rudd already in the town negotiating a concession for Cecil Rhodes. Cawston abandoned his initial plan and instead joined Rhodes and became a board member of the British South Africa Company at its inception.
He resigned from the company after the Jameson Raid.
