Life and Career of Plaxedes Wenyika
Plaxedis Wenyika is a celebrated award winning Zimbabwean Afro-Soul singer and songwriter. She made history by becoming the first woman to venture and breakthrough into an industry that was at the time male dominated and was among the pioneers of the very popular and unique to Zimbabwe, urban contemporary music genre called Urban Grooves.
Her chart topping debut album ‘Tisipararadzane’ released in 2002 sold over 50 000 copies established her as the Queen of Hearts and touching millions of lives with her love song anthems.
Career
Plaxedes started her music career at the tender age of 8. Well respected for writing in her field for writing all her music, she released her first album in 2002 which was titled Tisaparadzane which took the country by storm.
Her forte is tumultuous that is love and she has evolved into the darling of Zimbabwe. To date, she has 5 albums to her name namely Kamumhanzi, Sentiments, full circle and Tisaparadzane. She has performed in various countries around the globe and has also performed with the South African star Zahara in 2012 as well international star and legend, Joe Thomas.
She is also an actress and has been nominated for a National Arts Merit Award for her performance. She has acted in 2 films, one which was written by Tsits Dangarembgwa and X by Rumbi Katedza. An Economist by profession and the holder of an MBA, Plaxedes is a business woman with various successful business interests.
In 2012 Plaxedes made headlines when she announced that she was quitting her marketing job to focus on her music career. It had been 10 years without releasing an album.
Humanitarian work
A heart and passion to assist the vulnerable and under privileged has seen her work as a Brand Ambassador for Chinyaradzo Children’s Home and many other organisations championing causes such as human trafficking, gender and inheritance issues.
Now
Plaxedes is now married and a mother of two. Despite being a mother and wife, she continues to chase her passion in music.
