Life of Betty Makaya
Betty Makaya is an award-winning Zimbabwean Born urban grooves singer. She is widely known for her hit singles, Kurwizi which featured the late Jamal and Usipo which took the country by storm in the early 2000s.
Early life
Betty was born on the 14th of June 1983. She started singing at an early age in school and church.
Career
Her hit singles saw her receiving prestigious awards like the Best Urban Grooves Artist and best overall female artist at the 2004 Zimbabwe Music Awards. “Kurwizi” remains one of the best contemporary songs ever to be produced in Zimbabwe after 2000. According to iharare (2014), the song, which was eventually voted the Song of the Year, showed depth, creativity and a high level of ingenious on the part of the composer.
Her album, Ndicahnge Ndiripo, has been described as having been one of the albums to have defined the urban grooves genre in Zimbabwe.
She grew up listening and got inspiration from female artists like Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Chiwoniso and Thandiwe Mazwai.
Currently based in South Africa where she is married with 2 kids, Betty has since taken a break from the music industry. She attempted making a comeback in 2013 but failed to achieve the success she had reached with her album ‘Ndichange Ndiripo’ which was one of the most celebrated albums in urban grooves history. Despite the failed comeback, she is still one of the most celebrated artists of our generation
