Pioneer Column Soldier
Robert Beal was a pioneer column soldier. Born in Durham, England on 29 March 1859 he travelled to Africa and served in Bechuanaland with the Warren expedition and joined ‘ B ‘ troops of the Pioneer Corps in 1890 .
He fought in the Matebele war (1893) and led the relief column from Salisburry to Bulawayo in the Matebele rebellion (1896). In 1899 he was appointed assistant manager of Beira and Mashonaland railways.
Beal died in Beira Mozambique on the 9th of January 1907.
