Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell
Soldier ,Scout and Founder of the Boy Scout Movement.
Robert Baden-Powell was born the son of a professor at Oxford, he was educated at Charter House and in 1876 joined the army and served in India. In 1884 he visited Natal, and returned to Europe .
He returned to Africa and in 1896 he was appointed In-Chief of Staff under Sir F Carrington during the Matebele Rebellion. Throughout this campaign he followed his great interest in scouting . In 1899 he wrote (the Matebele Campaign). He was in command at Mafeking during the siege of 217 days in the Anglo Boer War and his organisation of the defence made him a hero . In 1910 he retired from the army to devote himself to growing the boy scout movement, a year earlier he was knighted and later created a baron in 1929.
Baden-Powell died 8th January 1941.
